When Ochaun Mathis entered the transfer portal many considered him to be a Texas Longhorn lock. However, Texas has faced strong opposition from the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the elite edge defender. Why will Mathis be a Texas Longhorn? Find out below.

Ochaun Mathis is one of the best remaining players in the transfer portal (On3 has Mathis as the #4 ranked available player). The former 2 time All-Big 12 defensive end would help the Texas Longhorns at a major position of need. With Ovie Oghoufo locking up one side of the defensive line Mathis would come in and start right away on the opposite side. Now, let’s discuss why Ochaun Mathis will be a Texas Longhorn.

#1: Early Playing Time For A Contender

Let me preface this by saying I know Mathis would start at Nebraska as well, but Nebraska is nowhere near competing for a conference championship. That is where Texas has an edge in my opinion. Mathis would start right away for a Texas team that could easily win the Big 12 this season. That national exposure is a huge selling point for an older player trying to get to the NFL.

#2: Gary Patterson

This one may be obvious, but it is a huge selling point. Mathis coming into a program with some familiarity in Gary Patterson would help make the transition smoother and overall, more successful. From all accounts Mathis loves Gary Patterson and I think it is no coincidence that Steve Sarkisian brought Patterson onto the staff. The addition of Patterson will not only help the on-field defensive success, but also the success of recruiting the state of Texas.

In Closing

I absolutely believe whenever Mathis makes his decision it will end up being the Texas Longhorns. Texas has led the entire way in this recruitment, and I don’t expect anything to change last minute. Mathis will hopefully push this pash rush over the hump and allow the team to have an amazing year off the edge.
