The Texas 2023 football season has been defined by a better culture and overcoming adversity. Whether it has been blown leads or injuries to key players. Texas’ Big 12 Championship hopes are alive because the corner has been turned in the Steve Sarkisian era. Texas is 16-4 in the last 20 games and are on an 8 true road game winning streak.

The Texas Offense

No matter who it is on the Texas offense, if someone is making a big run. Jordan Whittington almost certainly made a key block to help it happen. He came to play college football again to only help Texas win a Big 12 Championship. Just like in 2022 his first touchdown came when Texas needed it the most. With injured quarterback Quinn Ewers fighting through a grade 2 AC joint injury. Everyone in the sometimes forgotten underneath part of the offense stepped up to make sure this lead didn’t disappear.

In the backfield, whether Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson are gone to the NFL. Jonathon Brooks tearing his ACL versus TCU. Texas keeps churning out productive running backs. CJ Baxter stepped up for 117 yards on 20 carries. Jaydon Blue had 4 receptions for 31 yards. A room that against Texas Tech will be huge if they can be productive again and slow the game for Texas.

The Texas Defense

Despite secondary struggles in losing Ryan Watts & Jalen Catalon and not having the entire starting secondary at one point. This Texas run defense has been the best since 2009. And is only giving up 18.2 points per game. Great defenses get stops when they have to and Texas’ Big 12 Championship hopes are alive because they have during the second half of the season. The three true freshmen Anthony Hill, Manny Muhammed, and Derek Williams have made plays and have grown up throughout the season with injuries to starters.

How Texas Makes Big 12 Championship versus Texas Tech

The last hurdle to Texas for the Big 12 Championship game is Texas Tech. The last home game for Texas in the Big 12 before moving to the SEC. Texas Tech will want to hurry and get this defense tired. Texas will have to offensively slow the game down. And be okay with killing their spirit with 1,000 paper cuts.
