The Texas Longhorns have now wrapped up their spring training. Capping off the spring workouts with their televised Orange-White spring Game. There was much to glean from the game and today we’ll talk about the most important part, the Texas Longhorns quarterback room having complete clarity heading into the summer.

Texas Longhorns Quarterback Room, QB1: Quinn Ewers
Steve Sarkisian said it point-blank in the post-game press conference, “I think its pretty clear to say, Quinn is our starting quarterback”. Now, this isn’t breaking a lot of news for Texas fans and people who have been following the “competition” closely. However, it is encouraging that Sark had the confidence to outright say Quinn Ewers is their starter.
Quinn Ewers had an up and down year last year, but his flashes were exceptional. Against his toughest competition all season long, Alabama, he shined. Unfortunately, he was injured in that game and when he came back he just didn’t have that same confidence we saw in the first quarter of week two.
As Ewers continues to get healthier and progress his game this off-season, we should see a potential Heisman-caliber player under center once again for the Burnt Orange & White.
Maalik Murphy vs. Arch Manning for QB2
This was always the true Texas Longhorns quarterback room battle. Maalik Murphy was an incredibly talented recruiting coming out of high school. His biggest problem was always injuries and limited playing time, which ultimately dropped him from a five-star to a high end four-star consensus ranking (per 247sports).
Arch Manning was the most famous recruit to ever come out of high school. Being a third generation Manning quarterback carries a lot of weight. However, he’s coming from a lower level of competition than most prospects of his caliber. The transition to high-level college football was always going to be steep. It showed in the spring game.
Arch Manning’s Spring Game Performance
Arch struggled to work through a muddy pocket and find open receivers down the field. Completing only 5 of 13 pass attempts for 30 yards, Arch actually relied heavily on his legs and scrambling ability on Saturday. However, due to taking sacks Arch still ended the day with 7 rushing attempts for -8 yards.
Maalik Murphy’s Spring Game Performance
Maalik Murphy proved a year in Sarkisian’s system is a massive advantage. He completed 9 of his 13 pass attempts for 165 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an incredible deep ball to true freshman DeAndre Moore for a would-be 79 yard touchdown, but it was dropped. Murphy followed that up with another deep shot to other true freshman, Johnny Cook, which was completed for a 79 yard touchdown.
Current Texas Longhorns Quarterback Room Depth Chart
As it stands right now, the Texas Longhorns quarterback room is in incredible shape. Quinn Ewers is the returning starter and unquestioned leader in the room.
Maalik Murphy is coming off his redshirt season and looks to be healthy and as talented as advertising coming out of high school. Murphy will be the second string quarterback if he stays healthy.
Arch Manning has a lot to improve on heading into the summer. The game speed seemed to be too fast for Manning in the spring game. That is something that can easily be worked on, but it’s reasonable to think we will not see Arch in-game this season. He will likely get a redshirt-tag for the 2023 season, unless utter chaos occurs.
Charles Wright will likely be the 3rd or 4th quarterback on the depth chart. In his third season with Steve Sarkisian, Wright has proven to be a valuable depth piece for the Texas Longhorns quarterback room.
