When you look at the numbers and stats it’s very confusing why Texas was 8-5 in 2022. But they did, once again not because of a lack of talent. Just a lack of execution, health, and inexperience. Does Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers matter in the Alabama and Texas Tech losses? Not if fingernails and offensive no shows happen in October and November.
Texas 2022 By the Numbers
Offensively Texas had the number 20th offense with 35 points per game. They could not stay on the field with a 38.8 third down conversion percentage. On defense they had what all College Football Playoff national champions had besides 2019 LSU, a top 35 scoring defense. Ranking 21st in scoring defense with 22 points allowed per game. Despite being second in pressures, they were 78th in sacks. Texas also struggled to force fourth down turnovers, allowing 54.1 percent fourth down conversions and ending the season 81st in the country.
Inexperience and Inconsistency

Experience at quarterback alone is a great concern. All five quarterbacks behind Texas’ Quinn Ewers have zero college football snaps. Three of which are walk-ons. A big problem with the defensive struggles was the quarterbacks could not keep them off the field and the defense couldn’t hold up in the fourth quarter in two losses for Texas last season. And discipline was another issue as Texas had 79 penalties for 615 yards.
Defensive inexperience is very heavy on the two deep. It’s littered with freshmen and upperclassmen who haven’t played. Texas wants three linebackers on the field and two will have no extended experience. Which proved costly in two losses as Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs and TCU’s Kendre Miller were able to break off huge touchdown runs in both games. The outcome could have changed if inexperienced linebackers hadn’t left their fits unprotected.

How It Ties to Texas’ Quinn Ewers
In five games against Louisiana-Monroe, Alabama, Oklahoma, Iowa State, and Washington. Quinn Ewers had 1,189 yards, a 5-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. With the run game complementing the team in the fourth quarter and no mind blowing collapses. Oklahoma State where he had a fingernail injury Texas blew a ten point lead, allowing 17 unanswered. Also a near 100 snap defensive game that saw injuries and a two deep unable to overcome the volume of plays. Leading to a 794 yard, 5 touchdown and 4 interception four game stretch.
If Quinn Ewers can stay on the field and avoid injury. We can expect an improved strength and conditioning program that saw fewer injuries in 2022 and better play in the second halves of games. If Texas’ Quinn Ewers is ever who we think he could be we should show at the spring game this Saturday. Adding Adonai Mitchell from Georgia has made the receiving group six deep capable of opening massive holes for the run game without Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson.
