Adonai “AD” Mitchell joins Texas and their talented wide receiver corps for the 2023 season after spending his first two seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs. Mitchell enters an offense with Texas’ top three receiving targets returning: Xavier Worthy, JaTavion Sanders, and Jordan Whittington. Can AD Mitchell assert himself as one of Quinn Ewers’ top targets for the 2023 season?

AD Mitchell’s Strengths

Size

Arguably AD Mitchell’s biggest strength is his size. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 190 pounds, Mitchell consistently uses his size to his advantage. Sharing a room with Xavier Worthy (6’1″ and 165 pounds) and Jordan Whittington (6’1″ and 205 pounds), Mitchell brings some length to the top of the depth chart for Texas.

With an injury to Isaiah Neyor (6’3″ and 215 pounds) last Fall and Casey Cain (6’3″ and 195 pounds) never really developing into a consistent threat in 2022, Steve Sarkisian was lacking a true outside weapon with length in his offense. Having a player like Mitchell who can win contested catches against good competition help this Texas offense when a play breaks down or when no one is open.

AD Mitchell will surely help Sark have a full variety of weapons in 2023. The complimentary styles of Worthy, Whittington, and Mitchell will be key to helping along year two starter, Quinn Ewers.

Route Running

AD Mitchell brings more to the table than just his size. Mitchell is a skilled and savvy route runner as well. He consistently threatens the defense vertically, forcing defensive backs to retreat, only to break off his route on a dime with several yards of separation.

Todd Monken (Georgia’s offensive coordinator 2020-2022) and the Georgia staff constantly gave AD Mitchell comeback and curl routes to maximize Mitchell’s strengths. They also trickled in fade and go routes to keep defenses honest.

Conclusion

Overall, AD Mitchell is bringing to Texas a new look weapon for Quinn Ewers. His size coupled with his ability to create separation is a rare skillset to have.

We can see that this coaching staff leans more on speed and precise route running ability than they do size and contested catch ability. However, Sarkisian knows that you still have to have complimentary pieces in the wide receiver room.
