Texas recruiting has had back to back top five classes in 2022 and 2023. The coaching staff for the first time in a long time is going into year three on the 40 acres. Besides second year running back coach Tashard Choice and new wide receivers coach Chris Jackson. This recruiting success is a precedent that hasn’t been around since the mid-2000s Mack Brown era.
To avoid a certain “b” word, I’ll say Steve Sarkisian can possibly have Texas competing for conference and national championships again. Texas has 10 offensive players and 6 defensive players that could be drafted in 2024. That is if everything goes as well as it can go next season. Texas’ recruiting would have them as the 4th most talented SEC school right now and the most talented Big 12 school.
What Championship Rosters Look Like
Championship rosters on it’s face are very simple. A day one or day two player at every position through the two deep and at least one absolute monster at enough key places on the first string. Something like quarterback, left tackle, receiver, EDGE, linebacker, and cornerback. Texas has three five-stars at quarterback, Kelvin Banks, five huge receiving options, Barryn Sorrell who had 7.5 sacks in 2022, Jaylon Ford, Jahdae Barron and Ryan Watts are plus players in their roles. The quarterback has it’s questions but at least five of the six monsters are going to be known at kickoff week one.
Texas has 16 players that could be draft picks of guys who are draft eligible after next season. What’s underclassmen that can be ready contributors is even better for the team. It can compete for the Big XII. But on a national championship level in the college football era. Texas needs to have 30 NFL players and with an expanded playoff coming slowly making its way to 40 NFL players at all times.
Texas Recruiting and Future
Quinn Ewers wins the Big XII this season, Maalik Murphy bolts after coming into the SEC on fire and Texas is 10-2 in year one of the SEC. Texas recruiting in 2024 and 2025 were also top three classes. Finally, Arch Manning is the starter as a redshirt sophomore. Texas’ recruiting success, development and finding the right transfers caused by coaching continuity puts them in the 40 NFL players range. Texas recruiting could be at a level for Steve Sarkisian to do what has been missing and compete nationally again.
