The Texas Longhorns continue to have an embarrassment of riches in their runningback room. With returning contributors Keilan Robinson and Jonathon Brooks, the Longhorns also boast talented players such as five-star freshman Cedric Baxter jr., sophomore widereceiver-turned-runningback Savion Red, and talented redshirt freshman Jaydon Blue.
With both Keilan Robinson and Jonathon Brooks being held out of the spring game, it gave the younger players a chance to win touches on this offense. Jaydon Blue did not take the opportunity for granted. Although all the runningbacks had a good day on Saturday, we will focus on Jaydon Blue’s performance.
Jaydon Blue’s Spring Game Highlights
As I hinted above, Blue played well throughout the day. However, there was one play that was significantly more impressive than anything else we saw out of the runningbacks Saturday.
The quickness, speed, and balance that Jaydon Blue shows off on that run is the reason he was the number one runningback in the 2022 recruiting class at one time. Blue ended the day with 10 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. He also added 2 catches for 4 yards receiving as well.
Blue showed off as a runner, not just on outside runs but also as a downhill power runner. With his size there were questions that he would be more of a finesse player, he quieted those critiques Saturday.
Spring Game Takeaways for Jaydon Blue
Overall, Blue played really well on Saturday. However, I think it’s clear that he has things to work on to get even more playing time. Jaydon is going to have to become a master in pass protection, as well as a great option as a receiver to get significant playing time in 2023.
Perhaps he is already there as a pass protector and pass catcher. However, we did not see it in the spring game specifically so we still don’t know for sure. We will find out pretty quickly in 2023 as Texas can’t hold anything back in week two against Alabama.
Carving out a role as a pure runner will be difficult with so much other talent in this runningback room. Furthermore, at his stature (listed at 6’0″ and 190 pounds, but looks more like 5’10”), questions about durability will pop up for him as a true bell-cow runningback.
