Steve Sarkisian and this Texas staff have not been shy about plucking players from the transfer portal. Taking Quinn Ewers, Isaiah Neyor, Jahleel Billingsley, and Ryan Watts already this off-season, the Longhorns could be eyeing another massive addition.

Massive is the key word when describing the 6’7” 330 pound offensive tackle Amarius Mims. Mims is a redshirt freshman currently enrolled at the University of Georgia. However, he has entered his name into the transfer portal with the hopes of landing at a place where he can compete for a starting role immediately. Amarius Mims’ transfer portal declaration was a surprise. Hopefully, Texas can take advantage of it.

Texas Struggles

As Longhorn Nation understands, Texas must get their offensive line ready to compete in 2022. Steve Sarkisian and the staff have put together a solid group of skill players headlined by running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Assuming Quinn Ewers or Hudson Card provide (at least) average quarterback play, the offensive line is the only glaring weakness on the offense.

Currently, Andrej Karic and Jaylen Garth are competing for the starting left tackle position. However, with reports of Hayden Conner taking reps at left tackle in the scrimmage last Saturday it’s clear no one is impressing Kyle Flood and Steve Sarkisian.

Kyle Flood recruited Amarius Mims when he was still at Alabama, so there is a prior connection between the two. Flood and Sarkisian clearly wanted to build the offensive line through high school recruits. As they opted to take seven this off-season. However, they must have competent offensive line play in 2022 to unlock this potent offense. Amarius Mims provides Texas with a solid building block as a redshirt freshman.

Amarius Mims

Mims was a five-star offensive tackle in the 2021 recruiting cycle. He was also a top ten overall recruit.

Mims would come to the Forty Acres and immediately be the most talented offensive lineman on campus. Even when Kelvin Banks and Devon Campbell get to Austin, Mims would still rank as a higher prospect.

Amarius’ year of college experience would also help the Longhorns. Banks and Campbell are incredibly talented, however they’re just a few months removed from high school. It’s unfair to think they’re ready to go up against high-level defensive line talent. Specifically, Alabama in week two.

Amarius Mims provides Steve Sarkisian with a blue-chip left tackle who should be ready to start week one. Mims should have plenty of experience with elite defensive linemen. As he was going up against Georgia’s vaunted defensive line all of last season in practices.

Conclusion

Overall, Kyle Flood and Steve Sarkisian must get Amarius Mims onto the Forty Acres as soon as possible and they cannot let him leave without a commitment. Sarkisian’s offense must improve from last year. With Quinn Ewers, Xavier Worthy, and Bijan Robinson all together, Sarkisian has to show he’s still an elite play-caller and offensive mind. Amarius Mims’ transfer portal availably will not last long, Kyle Flood better get to work.

  1. We recruited supposedly top-rung talent for the OL. Can any of them start? Transfer portal is worth watching, but we need to develop our own players. We havent done that in years!
