*Editor’s Note Quinn Ewers has been named the Starting Quarterback* December 12, 2021 is a date Texas Longhorns fans will remember for years to come. The so called “prodigal son” Quinn Ewers returned to Texas and more specifically the 40 acres. The former 5-star, #1 overall player in the 2021 class is fighting for the starting quarterback spot against Hudson Card. Below, I will explain why Quinn Ewers will be the starting quarterback for the Longhorns.

Quinn Ewers Starting Quarterback

There are several reasons why I think Ewers is the better quarterback. However, I will try to keep this brief and not go down too many rabbit holes.

Ewers was brought in for a reason. After last season everyone could see that Casey Thompson and Hudson Card were not going to be viable options if this team wanted to compete for a Big 12 Championship or College Football Playoff spot. Sark even mentioned at the end of last season that the quarterback play was not up to par. Watching Card and Thompson play significant time last year it was pretty apparent why Ewers was recruited so heavily after he entered the transfer portal.

At the end of the day Ewers is Sark’s prototypical quarterback. Elite arm strength, good mobility inside and outside of the pocket, and the ability to breakdown defenses. Sark also values potential over experience. In recent media availability Sark had this to say about the topic:

“When it comes to a younger player as opposed to an older player and what that looks like from playing time and different things. I think it’s about trajectory. Right? What (does) his ascension look like? Right? Is he a guy that over time has gradually improved, or is he a guy that maybe has one good practice, one poor practice, one good practice, one poor practice?”

Just from that quote alone it is obvious that Sark prefers potential over experience. If you want to listen to the rest of the quote, click the link above and go to the 19:11 mark in the video.

In Closing

Again, there are several reasons why I think Quinn Ewers will be the starting quarterback when the season kicks off September 3rd. However, I think the potential over experience argument alone is enough evidence that Sark already has his mind made up. Sark has also stated that he will name a starter earlier than he did last year. I expect him to announce the starter 2-3 weeks before the season opener against Louisiana Monroe and I expect Quinn Ewers to be the starter.

  1. Didn’t you literally yesterday say “Speaking of the quarterback job. There must be a real concern no one can win it. Maalik Murphy is getting the most positive feedback publicly. Quinn either isn’t studying the playbook or simply not picking it up as Steve Sarkisian is frustrated with the mental mistakes he’s making. “?

So 24 hours later you always thought Quinn would be the starter?
