First Week of Longhorns Fall Training Camp Recap

The time is finally here. The first week of Longhorns fall training camp has concluded. In just under 30 days, UT will be facing off at DKR against Lousiana-Monroe in the first game. As each day inches closer, much more must be done to prepare this squad to face the Warhawks. The good news? Head Coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff still have time to get all the players game-ready and the newcomers on board with the culture.

Texas Longhorns Go Back To Work

Player safety was a key topic in this week’s reports as it reached 102 degrees in Austin. Because of this, Sark decided to run a padless practice on Wednesday.

When asked if guys could move up or down the depth chart this early, Sark replied, “Not right now. Everybody on the depth chart got the same amount of reps in individual drills.”

The whole team benefits from this decision. Especially the newcomers who aren’t used to the speed of college football.

As expected, the QBs were thoroughly analyzed in practice. Sark has yet to decide on the highly anticipated QB battle between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers.

Sark wants the pair to start competing against each other in camp. On Wednesday, Sark stated, “I felt like Hudson and Quinn both had good days today. Overall, I’m pleased.”

Arguably the biggest story in the Wide Reciever room this week was Troy Omeire. After a year without being on the field, Omeire eventually returned for practice. The Sugar Land native has suffered back-to-back knee injuries the last two seasons.

“It was good to have him back out there,” Sarkisian said. “He faded a little towards the end. But we saw glimpses of what we thought of Troy a year ago.”

Conclusion

This week’s practices seemed to be what the coaching staff had expected; every player got the opportunity to prove themselves each day. As training camp continues, drills will get more intense and position-based.

We all look forward to seeing which players will rise to the occasion.
