The morning of March 15th was eerily quiet, but that would change in a big way. The Longhorns receive some great news as Dylan Spencer commits to Texas, joining the 2023 recruiting class.

The Texas Longhorns gained the commitment of the four-star defensive end and consensus top 200 player over the likes of: LSU, Baylor, and Texas A&M.

Just like we saw in the 2022 class, Steve Sarkisian and staff are focusing on the trenches to start the recruiting cycle. Sark and Bo Davis are hunting for “big humans” who are also athletic. That is exactly what they have found in Spencer. At 6’4″ and 241 pounds, Spencer is an athletic edge who has potential to be an All-American at the next level.

If I learned anything from the 2022 recruiting cycle, it’s that this staff is elite at evaluating talent early on in the process. We saw that last year with another Houston defensive lineman in Kristopher Ross. Ross saw massive rating bumps throughout his senior season and also won the Texas District 21-6A MVP while at North Shore High School.

Basically, I said all of that to say this. I think we are going to see similar rating bumps for Dylan Spencer. This staff has already proven they can identify elite talent before the recruiting sites find it and I think it’s happening again with Spencer. When the dust is settled on this 2023 recruiting class, I expect Spencer to be on the verge of being a top 100 player.

The Texas defensive line is going to be a force to be reckoned with in a couple years. Especially if Sarkisian and staff keep earning commitments from top tier players in the trenches. Sark’s plan is pretty clear. Build the defensive and offensive lines right away.

In Closing

I believe in Sark’s plan, but more importantly the players are believing in his plan. Ten years from now I think we’ll be looking back and thinking to ourselves what a home run hire Sark was. However, only time will tell if he is the guy to get Texas back to the top of the college football world.
