It should be no secret that the 2023 recruiting cycle has gotten off to a slow start. However, I expect things to pick up quickly as we get closer to the Longhorns spring game and that all starts with the commitment of one of the best players in the nation 5-star running back Rueben Owens.

Owens is arguably the best running back in the country as a top 25 player nationally. The five-star back out of El Campo, Texas has always held the Longhorns in high regard. Owens even at one point committed to Texas last February before later decommitting in June.

Most recruiting analysts still believed he would end up on the forty acres and that all came to a peak when the infamous Steve Wiltfong entered a crystal ball for the Longhorns to pick up Owens’ commitment. Now if you know anything about Wiltfong, you know that once he enters a crystal ball it is basically guaranteed for that player to commit to the school the crystal ball was entered. Wiltfong has very deep ties and connections around the country. If he puts in a crystal ball it actually means something.

Now back to the man of the hour. It is obvious that Texas’ running back room is one of the best in the country. However, Owens would come in fighting for the starting spot (if Bijan Robinson declares for the 2023 NFL Draft) immediately. He is that talented of a player that he can make a difference straight out of high school.

In Closing

Landing Owens is not a necessity, because of the depth we have at running back, but he is very much a priority for Sark’s staff. Owens would also aid in the recruitment of Arch Manning, Johntay Cook II, and several other elite recruits.

Overall, the Texas Longhorns landing the commitment of Rueben Owens would be a huge boost to this recruiting class, but we need to look at the bigger picture which is the #1 overall recruit in the country Archibald (Arch) Charles Manning. Owens would definitely give us a huge boost in the Manning recruitment. Sark is finally starting to play chess not checkers and I’m here for it.
