After four games into the Texas Longhorns SEC era started 4-0 and are ranked #1 in the country. They have won by an average of 42 points and are scoring 53 points per game at home. Michigan dominated the line of scrimmage against USC, and Texas was able to do whatever they wanted their week 2 matchup. Between Quinn Ewers throwing no look passes and Arch Manning vertically stressing defenses in ways we haven’t seen in the Steve Sarkisian era, Texas has seen more receivers involved than the previous three seasons.
Texas Longhorns Offense in SEC

Between injuries to Jonathan Brooks and Cedric Baxter since late 2023. Jaydon Blue has shown why he was initially the number one running back in the 2022 class. He carried the load against Louisiana-Monroe as the only running back with any experience. Scoring four touchdowns throughout the night. The offensive line is has played well with four starters remaining from the 2022 season. The new receivers have fared well. Isaiah Bond leads the team in receptions and yards. There is a tie between Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond for the most touchdowns in 2024. True Freshman Ryan Wingo is second in yards and has two touchdowns.
The Texas Longhorns in SEC play must be more careful as they have thrown three interceptions in the last two games. They will see defenses that can turn them over and have offenses that will wear down their own defense if there are consecutive three and outs with turnovers. But if they continue to keep the quarterback off the ground up front this may be an offense capable of scoring into the 40 or more throughout SEC play. The Texas offense is 21 of 23 on red zone touchdown conversions. Scoring on 100% of red zone positions. That must continue for success in SEC play
Texas Longhorns Defense in SEC

While the defense hasn’t had the sack production expected. They have been creating turnovers and multiple in 3 of 4 games. This has led to them giving up 5.5 points per game. That is two touchdowns less than their 2023 mark. The biggest difference for them has been Clemson transfer Andrew Mukuba. The defense is not only faster on the back end but playing more together and smarter. With little drop off from losing two top 40 picks on the interior defensive line. Pete Kwiatkowski could have another year in which the scouring defense drops. This time as the Longhorns SEC play is finally among them. True Freshman Colin Simmons has been impressive. Tied with sophomores Anthony Hill and Liona Lefau for the team lead in sacks.
Conclusion

The first SEC welcome for Texas will be Mississippi State. While they have had their struggles this season, the Bulldogs will want to try to make a statement in Austin this weekend. Discipline play in all three phases of the game should help the Longhorns in the first SEC game. Quinn Ewers was able to throw last week leading up to Louisiana-Monroe. So, who will start will likely be a Friday to game time decision again this week.
