The Texas Longhorns fall camp starts this week. Steve Sarkisian has said the health of this team is in great shape. And he finally gets his team in his very own image. Something he didn’t get to see through at his previous two coaching jobs. What should everyone expect from Texas’ fall camp, 2024 recruiting, and the last Big 12 season for Texas?
2023 Texas Longhorns Fall Camp

Going into 2023 Texas hopefully can continue a having good health. At least Jalen Catalon and Cole Hutson will likely be in green jerseys leading up to Rice on September 2nd. One of the big things that need to be figured out is who is behind Ja’Tavion Sanders. Two tight ends are something that Steve Sarkisian likes to use and another reliable pass-catching tight end would help Quinn Ewers not struggle in those sets.
Texas fall camp for running backs is important as well. Texas has six running backs and will likely want to use all of them in one way or another. Keilan Robinson and Tre Wisner will occasionally line up in the slot. Savion Red who moved to running back this offseason could be in the slot and out of the backfield. Jonathan Brooks, Jaydon Blue, and Cedric Baxter will be the feature backs out of the backfield.

Defensively this Texas fall camp has to produce answers behind Barryn Sorrell and at linebacker. The EDGE position has many questions as the group will depend on a lot of freshmen and sophomores. At linebacker, it sounds like Mo Blackwell is taking strides next to Jaylan Ford. True Freshmen Anthony Hill will likely have a role as a linebacker and at EDGE for Texas this fall camp.
Texas 2024 Recruiting

After the official visit weekend, Texas had a big jump in commits as they added 12 commits to the 2024 class. In this era of college football Texas’ fall camp producing a few freshmen who are key players could help land six to eight five-star and high four-star players still on the board for Texas. How Texas grows on the field could shape the future of this class.
Texas’ Last Big 12 Season

With three new special assistants to the head coach and possibly a fourth should Gary Patterson return to the program. Texas has a two time Super Bowl special team assistant in Joe DeCamillis. Texas could get creative to bring more field position help to the offense and defense. With Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson gone, Paul Chryst was brought in to make sure the team doesn’t get stagnant in the run game. If we see these two be home run hires we could see the second half struggles disappear.
With Payam Saadat working the front end and potentially Gary Patterson on the secondary. The Texas defense could make another serious jump. Having Patterson around helped Texas make almost a touchdown improvement from 2021 to 2022. If the defense could shave a couple of points off again in 2023, it would be a great help to the offense in closing games.
Closing
With the talent of this team and the investment of the coaching hires. An explosive offensive and young, fast defense. Texas is capable of being a 10 win team in it’s last Big 12 season. Preseason favorites in 11 games, whether this is a successful season comes down to focus, execution, and the improvement of the quarterback and the head coach.
