University of Texas at San Antonio or more commonly named UTSA, came to the Forty Acres Saturday to face off against the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns were coming off a close loss against the number one ranked team in the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide. UTSA started off their season 1-1 as well, losing in overtime to Houston week one before beating Army week two. Now, let’s recap Texas versus UTSA in week three.
Recap of Texas versus UTSA
The First Half
In the first half, UTSA pulled out all of the stops. The Roadrunners marched down the field two drives in a row, resulting in 10 points. They then sprung a surprise onside kick and recovered. One play later, UTSA used a trick play which included their running back throwing a deep shot to their number one wide receiver, Zakhari Franklin, for a touchdown.
Texas would fight back and tie the game at 17-17 before halftime. However, the Longhorns defense showed some signs of weakness, specifically at tackling.
The Second Half
Texas would come out of halftime tied 17-17, however it didn’t take long for the Longhorns to run away with the game.
Texas would force UTSA to punt after half and it would take Bijan two plays to run for 80 yards and a touchdown, which included his electric 78 yard touchdown scamper.
The next score of the game would be a UTSA field goal with 3:25 left in the 3rd quarter. On the next drive Texas would be forced to punt. UTSA would get the ball back, however, it would result in points for Texas as Jahdae Barron would intercept UTSA quarterback Frank Harris for a pick-six. Texas would head into the 4th quarter leading UTSA 31-20.
The Fourth Quarter
After the pick-six UTSA would get the ball back. Texas’ defense was now settled in after a shaky first half. The pass rush was consistently getting pressure on Frank Harris, but wouldn’t finish the job and account for a sack.
With 13:55 left in the 4th quarter, DeMarvion Overshown would be called on for a blitz. Overshown showed off his impressive speed and athleticism and sack Frank Harris on the play. However, the play would go under review for a “targeting” penalty.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the “Targeting” penalty in college football, here is the definition from the NCAA rulebook.
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact With the Crown of the Helmet
“ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)”
Targeting – NCAA rulebook 2019
DeMarvion Overshown did not use the crown of his helmet in any way while tackling Frank Harris for the sack. However it was still ruled a Targeting penalty, a 15-yard penalty was enforced, and Overshown was ejected from the game.
The Texas Longhorns were still up 31-20 at the time, it seemed like the Longhorns were in good shape to win the game even without their star linebacker. That held true as Texas would eventually win the game 41-20.
Free DeMarvion Overshown
The problem is that since the targeting call was in the second half, Overshown would be forced to sit out the first half of next weeks game as well.
That would be a massive blow to Texas’ defense, especially because it is the beginning of Big 12 conference play. Steve Sarkisian told the media after the game he planned to appeal this half-game suspension to the Big 12 officials this week.
Texas survived an early upset alert this week. Next, the Longhorns head to Lubbock, Texas. They will face off against the Red Raiders for their first game of Big 12 conference play. They will need all the help they can get until star quarterback Quinn Ewers is back from injury.
Make your voices heard by the Big 12 officials this week and continue the #FreeDeMarvion movement.
