On Friday Texas had its first scrimmage. Texas scrimmage had some great things to hear and some very bad things to hear. The defense looked great. The offense, particularly the quarterbacks and first team offensive line, were not anything close to good. And the injuries to key depth pieces were just gut wrenching.
The Good of the Texas Scrimmage
I’ll start with the good news from the Texas scrimmage and the fully padded practices. Bijan Robinson is looking as good as he has even with a bad first-team offensive line blocking in front of him. In Texas’ scrimmage he had one carry. He took it 40 yards for a touchdown. The good Texas can take from the offensive line play is that the highly touted 2022 freshman running with the second team offensive line are looking much better than the first team against both the first and second team defense. The receiver room is looking very good in training camp. Xavier Worthy is performing better than last year. Isaiah Neyor, Savion Red, and Tarique Milton are impressing. For whoever wins the quarterback job will probably have 8-10 solid options every week.
The Bad of the Texas Scrimmage
Speaking of the quarterback job. There must be a real concern no one can win it. Maalik Murphy is getting the most positive feedback publicly. Quinn either isn’t studying the playbook or simply not picking it up as Steve Sarkisian is frustrated with the mental mistakes he’s making. Is there a reason besides the Arkansas game last season that Hudson Card can’t beat out a raw prospect in Maalik and a guy who isn’t understanding the offense yet in Quinn?
Now to be fair, it’s hard to be impressive when the defensive line is reportedly kicking the first team offensive line’s butt worse than the 2021 training camp. In 2021, the offense was great even with Casey Thompson that had a broken thumb. The defense was 70th in scoring and 99th in yards. So does it even matter? Or is it a product of understanding what its offense is doing?
The Ugly
Okay, as I said the Texas Scrimmage had some ugly moments for the team. But nothing to be concerned with play-wise. We discovered Jahdae Barron was in a boot. Roschon Johnson was carted off after screaming in pain from a “not serious injury” as a family member put it. He has suffered a mild sprain. Isaiah Neyor was also injured and will be out for the season with a torn ACL. Those are 3 pieces critical to Texas’ depth and in the case of Roschon the leadership and heart of the team. Junior Angilau also is reported to have a season-ending injury.
Conclusion
To conclude, Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy look great through the first Texas scrimmage. The quarterback play has been below average at best. Whether that’s their fault or the first offensive line group’s we’ll know when the games start. The young guys on the offensive line look great against both first and second team defenses.
