Texas’ SEC Move Must Be Accelerated

Texas & OU - SEC

We all saw the news last year. The seemingly out of nowhere breaking news – that Texas & Oklahoma were moving to the SEC. Almost a year later, I remember exactly where I was in my home, the exact facial expression I made, and the exact words I can’t repeat. Now the effects of Oklahoma and Texas’ SEC move are officially underway.

The Teams Set to Come to the Big 12

The American Athletic Conference has their six new teams ready to go in July 2023. Announced just shortly before the Big 12 said BYU, Cincinatti, Houston, and UCF are going to become Power 5 schools in July 2023. We all get weekly Sunday reminders of what Taysom Hill did twice to Texas if you watch Saints games. The committee just put Cincinatti in the College Football Playoff ahead of Big 12 champion Baylor, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. Would they have done any better against Alabama? No, they probably wouldn’t have. While some of the magic for UCF has worn off post Scott Frost era. The momentum for Cincinatti and Houston almost couldn’t feel hotter. Both playing for the AAC Championship in 2021. BYU finished the 2021 season 10-3.

Although, if you remember after the meltdown from the Big 12. I saw they couldn’t leave until 2024. I didn’t believe that one shot from those schools was worth waiting until 2025 anymore. The schools need to leave in 2024. I believe Texas and Oklahoma need to leave in July 2023. They are both recruiting the bodies to compete in the SEC.

Potential Problems for Texas in the SEC

Texas players say that the offensive linemen from the 2022 class have been impressive so far. A position that looked undeveloped for years. So, it looks like there will be no issues keeping the quarterback upright. The Mannings are very patient as it pertains to when Arch gets on field. A second year behind Quinn will not be a problem. Though, competing with Maalik Murphy in 2025 will be a close battle. The biggest problem looks to be the defensive recruiting. When are the recruits going to start buying what the coaches are selling? With Gary Patterson now in the room the defense has to be better.

The only question is: is the risk of playing in the Big 12 with the new schools worth it for Texas? With the transfer portal and NIL, Texas and Oklahoma must consider leaving early for the SEC. What’s the risk they’re willing to take, stay in the Big 12 for two years with the newcomers, high risk and low reward. Suck it up and pay the Big 12 the eighty million dollar payout, that’s a high risk and high reward move for both schools.
